Enter an eerie haunted house

Deadstep is a first-person horror game in which you must keep your nerve together to solve a series of tasks. Explore the haunted house, find the objects you need, but avoid the creepy ghost that is out for your soul.

Suited to players who enjoy haunted house titles, such as Madison and Spooky's House of Jump Scares, Deadstep is the sort of game that prioritizes atmosphere. It combines straightforward gameplay with a horror-film tone.

Explore a creepy haunted house

Deadstep opens by placing the player into an eerie, atmospheric horror setting and sending them to perform various tasks. The first mission is to collect six candles for an exorcism, but to do so quietly: the sound-based mechanics ensure that the local ghosts can hear you move. Attracting attention will conjure creepy voices and visual distortions.

Six stages of horror

The game has a total of six stages in all. The basic mechanics remain much the same throughout: your job is to collect objects while avoiding the ghosts that haunt the building. However, the game succeeds in ramping up the difficulty each time. Every level brings with it more cunningly hidden objects and ghosts that are harder to avoid.

A creepy atmosphere

As with all horror-themed games, Deadstep may not be appropriate for younger or more sensitive players. The graphics are somewhat old-fashioned, which may take the edge off the horror. Still, the whispering voices that appear when you disturb the ghost will be unsettling for many players.

Short and inexpensive

While Deadstep does not have a tremendous amount of variety between its six stages, the fact that it is a relatively inexpensive game will make this a minor quibble. The game is suited to horror enthusiasts who feel like a quick and diverting ride that will not cost too much in terms of either time or money.

PROS

  • Atmospheric voice effects
  • Engaging hide-and-seek gameplay

CONS

  • Graphics are fairly basic
  • Too disturbing for younger players
